Rishik's Rock Collection

I'm Rishik and this my rock collection. I am ten and these are the rocks I have. I get these rocks from my dad's friends (Thanks Kevin, Peter) who are geologists and some of my rocks were bought at Beaconsfield in Tasmania. I live in Sydney.

Pyrite

Pyrite otherwise known as fools gold. Pyrite is an iron disulfide. Its crystals are usually cubic. The name Pyrite comes frome the Greek word puro which means fire. Such a name is because Pyrite rubbed against metal makes fire.

Mica

Mica comes in the form of thin sheets of minerals. The word Mica comes from the Latin word meaning to shine as its gleaming appearance.

Atacamite

Atacamite is a copper chloride hydroxide which is why it is green. It is called Atacamite because it is a mineral that was first found in the Atacama desert in Chile and was found in 1801.

Smithsonite

Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate. Smithsonite can come in a variety of colours. There was much confusion between Smithsonite and Hemimorphite in the past. James Smithson first described Smithsonite in 1832 and that is why it is called Smithsonite.
